Why I don't like Facebook anymore
I do not intent to say that Facebook is not a good
application. It is indeed a good application, but the usage pattern of people
that I feel wrong. Again, this is solely based on my experience with Facebook.
Yes, I too am in Facebook and I still log in to it once or twice daily. Is Facebook doing any good to our life or is it making the
already spoilt life that is addicted to computer and internet where we have automatic
spell-checking, don't need to remember anything, can *undo* anything and made
our life an open book? Well, I am not going into the level of spoiling the new
technology done to our lives, but only concentrating on the Facebook and on the
effects that I feel it made to the youth especially in my home state.
I am still logging into Facebook hoping to get some
information about new technology, but what I can see is just hate speech, half-truth
or naked lie, content theft and of course here and there may be new shared
photos and videos.
When the India Against Corruption campaign had started I
could see every one, each and every one, Sharing/Liking their support to
different comment and photos in the comfort of their home or office. All are
ready to support any cause by sharing in Facebook, but cannot spend a penny or
have time to physically support a cause.
Daily we are posting photos and videos and the places we are
visiting, exposing us to security agencies and more importantly, criminals
whose prying eyes are looking for a small lead through which they could gain
access to your accounts, be it email or Bank account !!!.
I do not have the data or the facility for calculating the
Internet usage, Electricity, Money and the Carbon Emission when you are
spending 1 hour in Facebook. But I am sure that even if that footprint is small
(I don’t believe it is *too* small),
the time you wasted was precious, at least for you.
Facebook had been here for almost 8 years. But it gained
popularity among Indians only a few years back. It is good that you are able to
find out your childhood friends and reconnect with them. But, how many posts
from them were useful to you now? We are seeing a lot of images, videos and
quickly scroll through them. We do not even have an eye for most of the items.
When we go for shopping, do we buy everything that we find
beautiful? What we do in Facebook? We see a beautiful picture in a post we
share it. We see another post, we share it too. Do we do this if we have the
permission to post/share only say, 5 posts per day? We will be careful in sharing.
We are sharing necessary and un-necessary things. It costs us just a click.
What is the benefit of your share? Just one another share in your friend’s wall
post that may go un-noticed. But, that costs the data transfer, Electricity,
Server CPU cycles, heat generation, increasing carbon footprint … the list goes
on.
Another syndrome with young is that they gather around
accident scenes and busy taking pictures and videos, but does not help the
victim. They are taking the photos and videos for sharing. Again, useless data
that chock the Internet which can be used for other good purpose.
It is up to us to limit the level that we are exposed in the
Internet and to the associated threats.
We should grow up. We need to have ideas spreading, good
discussions and collaborative environment to build a better world.
